“The professional and compassionate approach to support felt like we had a guardian angel helping us to negotiate the difficult path of being bereaved by suicide.”
How we will support you
Our team provides support to bereaved family, friends and professionals across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.
While we want to help everyone who would like support, we regularly have to take the difficult decision to limit the number of people we take on. We understand that this can be very hard for those we are unable to support.
Suicide bereavement services FAQs
Who can access the suicide bereavement support?
Our services are for close family, friends and professionals living in Cambridgeshire or Peterborough. Our services are open to people aged 17 or over. We can provide signposting to specialist young people’s or children’s services.
I’m not sure whether my relative / friend died by suicide, can I receive support?
Yes. Our services are open to people who are bereaved by suicide or suspected suicide.
Do I have to access all the different services?
No, our suicide bereavement services are independent of each other. You can access what you think will be helpful for you.
Do I need a professional referral?
No, you can self-refer to any of our suicide bereavement services.
Why do I need to wait for 6 months before accessing counselling?
Counselling can be very intense because it explores your feelings in-depth. To get the most out of counselling it is important to allow some time to process the initial shock and deal with any practical issues. Our liaison workers from the Suicide Bereavement Support Service can support you during these early days and months.
Where do your counselling sessions take place?
Our sessions take place in Cambridge or Peterborough. However, online or telephone therapy may be possible in certain circumstances.
Where do your support groups take place?
Our support groups take place in Cambridge and Peterborough.
Why do you limit the number of people you support?
We are funded to employ two part-time workers. Each worker is able to support a limited number of people at any time. We would love to be able to help everyone who wants support, but unfortunately this is rarely possible. We continually seek additional funding and hope to be able to expand the service in the future.
